Family or Systemic Constellation work is a radical method for investigating and healing unhealthy systemic influences from the past. The method was developed 25 years ago by the German psychotherapist Bert Hellinger. It enables a living 'snapshot' of the energetic system of a family or other group system to be seen and manipulated, so that blockages to the healthy flow of energy can be overcome. This is a little like doing acupuncture on the Family Soul.
Hellinger showed that every family has a systemic field, an intelligent energy field that contains all the important energetic impressions of the family system. Traumatic events cause disturbances in the free flow of energy in the family systemic field, and these blockages affect family members in various ways. By setting up a family constellation the dynamics of the family field can be seen directly, and healing interventions can be made.
Experience with constellations has shown that everyone in a family is connected by the field for at least 3 generations. This means that a trauma that was experienced by our grandfather can be directly affecting us energetically, even if we do not know about the trauma. Only by setting up a family constellation can we see clearly what systemic influences are acting on us, and the constellation also gives us the opportunity to free ourselves from unhealthy systemic influences.
Hellinger found that the death of children often severely distorts the free flow of love within a family system, particularly if the parents were not in a position to grieve fully. The unprocessed grief is then stored within the family systemic field, and the field then transfers this grief energy to a member of the next generation. As a result, a sibling of the dead child may carry the grief energy, and pass it on to its own child. This child will then grow up feeling unexplainable sorrow or a sense of isolation, which is not directly related to its life experience.
Constellation work has shown that many of us are carrying traumatic feelings that come from past generations. These 'identifications' prevent us from living and loving freely, and are very difficult to let go off. During a constellation the client will choose representatives for certain family members. She will then place these representatives in the room wherever it feels right to place them. From then on, she simply watches as the constellation unfolds.
An extraordinary thing occurs once the representatives have been placed. They begin to feel the feelings of the person they are representing. This occurs even if they know nothing about that person. Once a client sets up a constellation, the family systemic field is present, and it informs the feelings of the representatives. A representative for the client is also included, and this enables the facilitator to see if and where the client is bound by identification to the fate of other family members.
Family Constellation work enables the facilitator to bring about healing change within the family systemic field. For example, when a child's death was not fully grieved for by its parents, the facilitator may encourage the representatives for the parents to hold the representative for the dead child. It is extraordinary how real the feelings of grief are that come forth in the representatives. Once the parents have been allowed to grieve for the child, a blockage to the free flow of love in the family has been removed. In the process, any identification the client had with the feelings of the parents or the dead child evaporates, freeing the client to be herself, perhaps for the first time in her life.
Constellation work can help resolve almost any issue. When a family identification is not involved, other elements can be represented in the constellation. For example, the facilitator may set up representatives for the body, the heart and the mind of the client. Such a constellation can offer very useful information about why the client is having difficulties, and interventions by the facilitsator can bring about healing changes within the individial energetic system of the client. (Each person is a complete energetic system, as is each family, each nation and each distinct group, be it ethnic or professional or social).
This work sounds very different from most therapies, and it is. It requires no special ability to be a representative in a constellation, and most representatives find it to be a healing experience in itself. Since Constellation work is very deep work, the client is encouraged to be gentle with himself after a session, and to expect suppressed feelings to come to the surface. The full effects of a constellation in the client's life may not be seen for several months. Since the work is done at the soul level, it takes time for the effects to flow up to the surface and be visible.
Dr Bailey took a full 18 month training in Family and Systemic Constellations in Copenhagen. His trainers were world-renowned teachers Ursula Frank and Albrecht Mahr, as well as Liv Thomassen. He has also completed a full 18 month training in Systemic Ritual in Berlin with Daan Van kampenhout.
Dr Bailey gives regular Constellation workshops in West Australia. Constellation and Systemic Ritual workshops can be provided anywhere in the world by mutual arrangement.
